Welcome to Valo Reader
What Valo Reader is, how it fits language study, and where to go next.
What Valo Reader is
Valo Reader is a story-first study app for language learners. Instead of drilling flashcards in isolation, you read real content — stories, articles, subtitles — with tools that help you understand each sentence and notice useful words in context.
The app is designed for learners who already have some foundation in their target language and want to build fluency through extensive and intensive reading. If you can read at least simple sentences with occasional dictionary help, you are ready to start.
The study loop
Every session follows the same cycle:
- Add a story to your library from the shared collection, by uploading a file, pasting text, or importing a YouTube video.
- Read in page or sentence mode, tapping words to inspect readings and definitions.
- Study actively with quizzes, AI grammar breakdowns, and audio playback.
- Track progress as your vocabulary familiarity grows and your stats update.
The loop is flexible — you can spend an entire session reading without tapping a single word, or drill deeply into every sentence. Valo Reader adapts to your style.

Key features
Tap-to-understand reading. Tap a word to see its reading, dictionary form, definition, and example context without leaving the story. See Word tokens and definitions for how this works.

Vocabulary tracking. Every word you interact with is tracked across six familiarity levels. Your vocabulary state is per-language and shared across all stories, so marking a word as Familiar in one story carries over everywhere.
Audio and subtitles. Import audio narration or use YouTube timestamps to read along with native speech. Sentence-level cue alignment lets you navigate by audio position. See Audio playback and subtitle cues for details.
AI study tools. Request sentence-level translations and grammar breakdowns generated per-sentence. Quizzes draw from the vocabulary in the story you are reading. For an overview of what is available, see Reader study features overview.
Stats and goals. Reading time, words read, quiz accuracy, and streak tracking give you a window into your study habits without turning learning into a spreadsheet. See Stats dashboard overview.
What Valo Reader is not
Valo Reader is not a replacement for structured lessons or a full course curriculum. It does not teach grammar from scratch, provide explicit writing practice, or replace human conversation partners. It is a companion for the reading side of language acquisition — the part where you encounter real language in context.
Where to read next
If you are brand new, start with First story from the shared library to get something on your bookshelf, then read Choosing your study language to make sure your language settings are correct. The Reading page vs sentence modes article will help you pick a reading style once your first story is ready.
